Hook Crook

Here is a crooked poem! Read "A Crooked Crook" on the screen below or on the handout sheet. You may want to compare it with the "Captain Hook" in Where the Sidewalk Ends, by Shel Silverstein.

After you have read the poem, you'll be ready to write your own "Crook-Hook" poem!

A Crooked Crook

A crook as bold
as old Captain Hook
told of the gold
and other things he took.
He wrote it all down
in a big black book.

When I opened the book
I read of all
the crooked crook took;
Not only gold he stole
Not only hooks and a fishing pole
Not only bags of gold from an old troll
but hundreds of cookbooks he took!

He took good books from pastry cooks
who liked to bake pies, souffles and cakes.
He hummed a crooked tune
licked their crooked spoons
and threw the pastry cooks' books -- kerplunk! -- into the lake.

For goodness sake!
That crooked crook
made a big mistake.
Imagine my birthday
without a cake!

Rewrite/Edit

Read your ook/ake poem over and "listen" to the sound. Do you like how it sounds? Does it say what you mean it to say? Make changes until your poem makes "sound sense."

Exchange poems with your writing partner or a friend. Read one another's poems out loud and "listen" for the beat. Make any final changes.
