What's in a Word?

Words can have positive or negative connotations (feelings) that affect our reaction to a piece of writing. You can change the whole feeling of a paragraph by your choice of words.

Read the paragraph below and note the words in parentheses.

Rainstorm

What was that? In the distance a low (rumbling) awoke Cheri. She arose (slowly) and got ready for school. As she waited for the bus, she felt the (cool) rain on her face. The bus driver hit a puddle and water (splashed) against her leg. As she stepped into the bus, someone (exclaimed,) "Isn't this a (wonderful) storm!"

This paragraph uses words that convey a generally positive feeling toward the rainstorm. You can change the feeling of the storm by substituting more "negative" words.

Now copy the Rainstorm paragraph in the space beside the < > angle brackets. Then substitute the words from the list below for the words in parentheses.

Current Word	Substitute Word

rumbling	clatter
slowly hesitantly
cool cold
splashed	sloshed
exclaimed	shouted
wonderful	terrible

< >

Go back to the paragraph and add other words that give the story an even more negative feeling.

Below are five sets of words. Both words in each set are close in meaning, but have different connotations. Choose the words in either Column A or Column B, then write a short descriptive paragraph using all five words in that column.

Column A Column B

muddy filthy
frog swamp creature
hopping bounding
green moldy-colored
croaking droning

What type of mood did you achieve in your writing?

Now copy your paragraph to the < > angle brackets below. Then substitute the corresponding words in the other column for the words you used.

< >

What effect does your paragraph have now?

Go back to each of the paragraphs you wrote and make other changes that help you achieve the effect you want.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
