Euphemisms

Have you ever wanted to tell someone that he or she had bad breath but you didn't know quite how to say it? Well, you could use a euphemism (yoo-fe-miz-em). A euphemism is a word or expression used to make something sound less unpleasant or offensive. Instead of saying "Your breath stinks," you can say "You have halitosis." It means the same, but it sure sounds a lot nicer. Euphemisms have positive connotations.

Here are some plain words and their euphemisms:

Sometimes people use euphemistic expressions to "soften" what they are trying to say. Perhaps someone is described as inaccurate or mistaken instead of a liar. A
teacher may tell a parent, "Your child needs to learn self-control," instead of saying "Your child keeps hitting everyone."
