Find and Replace It

"I said, then he said, and then she said..."

Sounds Boring!

As we pointed out in the previous lesson, there are many words that can be used in place of the word "said." Words like "whispered" or "muttered" are powerful because they give a feeling or shade of meaning to your writing. Here is an example:

When the curtain went down, Hank muttered, "This was the dumbest play I've ever seen."

Write down all the words you can think of that mean almost the same as "said" but that have different shades of meaning. Try to list at least 15 words. Use a thesaurus if necessary.

In the paragraphs below, you will see the word "said" written nine times. Delete each "said," and replace it with an appropriate word from your list.

Our trip to Grandma's house seemed to last forever. After five minutes my little brother, Todd, said, "Are we there yet?"

"Of course not," Mom said.

Two minutes later, Todd said, "Please, please, can we stop for hamburgers?"

"No way," said Dad.

But when Todd said, "I have to go to the bathroom now!" we stopped.

I thought our troubles were over then. I even said that Todd was an okay kid. I guess I said that too soon, because as I sat back to relax, he said, "Watch where you sit. The cat just threw up all over." I won't tell you what I said then!

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.
