Changing Feelings

Feelings are part of everything we do and think. Sometimes they give us confidence, sometimes discouragement. In this activity we will explore the world of our feelings.

List all the feelings you can think of. You may want to list them in pairs of opposites. For example:

love/hate
happy/sad
violent/peaceful

Type your list at the < > angle brackets:

====================

Although feelings are not in themselves "good" or "bad," they often feel that way! Choose three "good" feelings and three "bad" feelings, then finish the sentences below as completely as possible. Provide as many details as you can.

"Good" Feelings:

1.  I feel < > when < >

2.  I feel < > when < >

3.  I feel < > when < >

"Bad" Feelings:

1. I feel < > when < >

2. I feel < > when < >

3. I feel < > when < >

====================

Now expand one of your sentences into a paragraph. Be sure to use metaphors in your writing. Here is an example:

I feel happy when I'm at the beach with a friend on a warm, sunny day. We bake in the warmth of the sun like slices of bread in a toaster while we listen to our favorite radio station and munch plenty of good snacks. I am a carefree gull gliding and soaring over the waves, riding high on the wings of happiness!

First copy the sentence of your choice below at the < > angle brackets. Then write your paragraph.

<  >

====================

Now think of a way to change your "bad" feelings into positive ones. Write a three- to five-sentence paragraph that describes how you can make that change. For example, here is a statement about loneliness:

     "I feel angry and lonely and sad when no one is around."

The following paragraph expresses what I could do to change these uncomfortable feelings to more positive ones.

"I feel angry, lonely, and sad when no one is around. So I just sit there for awhile. At a certain point I realize I'm feeling sorry for myself, so I call a friend, or I go to the park, or I get on my bike and ride to a friend's house. Sometimes I just decide to read a book or listen to the radio. Then someone usually calls me."

Choose one of your "bad" feelings statements from above. Copy it by the < > marker below and then write your paragraph.
