Imaginary Changes

When we write transformation poems based upon changes that occur in our imaginations, we turn inward rather than discovering the changes outside of ourselves.

Dark changes to light
in my mind

Thinking about poetry
pounds into a headache

My headache blooms
into a bouquet of lilies

The lilies are crystal glasses
for two lovers.

I wiggle a string into a snake
The snake is cut into worms
The worms are fried into cereal
The cereal is served to you
in the school cafeteria.

====================

Many wonderful images and ideas come from our dreams -- both night dreams and daydreams. Take a minute to close your eyes and recall an image or two from a dream. See how one image changes or ends, and another image takes its place. Here is an example:

Walking down a long hall
stops into standing alone
in an empty room.

The sun is squeezed
into the yellow yolk of an egg.

White stones sail into the sky
and billow lightly into white clouds.

Running away from a mean gang
Leaps into flying above the city
and out into the beautiful country.

Think of the word "imagination" as being made up of the words "image" plus "nation." Then the imagination becomes a nation of images born in the mind. Fairy tales seem to come from that "nation of images" where any change is possible. Think of the prince who becomes a frog and who then kisses back into a prince. Or the pumpkin that becomes a coach.

====================

Make a list of transformations that take place in fairy tales and other imaginative stories such as cartoons and fantasies.

====================

There is an interesting way to create imaginary transformations without actually imagining. What you do is look around the room until your eyes rest on something. Then simply write down what you see. For example, if my eyes come to rest on the windows and the tree outside, I write exactly that.

The windows and trees outside

Now, in order to find out what the windows and trees outside transform into, I close my eyes. I slowly move my head, open my eyes, and observe what my eyes focus upon.

The windows and trees outside
become a file cabinet with books stacked on top.

The stack of books bends into a castle and tower
about to crumble on the heads of nasty invaders.

All the people are living underground
in the filing cabinet.
