Sentence Mix-Up


When you write something, you may not put the sentences in the best order. By carefully rereading your paragraphs you can often find a clearer or stronger way to order the sentences. The result? Paragraphs that read more smoothly.

In this activity, you will put groups of sentences in the order you think they belong. There is no one correct order, but some choices make more sense than others.

Find the topic sentence to begin your paragraph. Then look for key words that link certain sentences together. Order the supporting detail sentences after the topic sentence. Finally, put the summary sentence at the end of the paragraph.

Exercise 1

Here is the first group of sentences. Decide what you think is the order they should go in. Then copy them by the <  > angle brackets below, one sentence after another. When you finish, you should have a smooth paragraph.

Once, when "Teddy" Roosevelt was hunting, he spotted a bear cub.

Soon toy makers began making stuffed bears called "Teddy Bears" in Roosevelt's honor.

The teddy bear is named for Theodore Roosevelt, a President of the United States.

Instead of shooting the cub, he spared its life.
