Colorful Sentences

When building colorful, interesting sentences, we must choose words that give a clear picture of the subject of the sentence. To tell "who" or "what," we use nouns. These nouns tell the subject of the sentence.

Can you think of some nouns that could be subjects of sentences? List them at the < > marker below.

We use verbs to tell what the noun or subject does. Verbs are also called action words.

Can you make a list of verbs (or action words) below?

====================

Sentences can be made more interesting or colorful by adding words that tell us about nouns and verbs. Words that tell about nouns are called adjectives. Adjectives may tell the number, size, shape, color, or other details about the noun.

Adverbs tell about verbs. Adverbs tell how the action happens. Adverbs usually end in "ly." We might say that the dog ran slowly or quickly. He might bark softly or loudly.

====================

When writing sentences, use nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. You can practice making sentences by stringing all of these four kinds of words together. The pattern that the words need to follow is shown below.

Example:

Adjective: Blue

Noun: cars

Verb: drive

Adverb: slowly.

Blue cars drive slowly.

Now complete five sentences that follow the pattern shown above. Nonsense sentences are OK! Type your sentences at the < > angle brackets below.

Choose your words from the word bank. The first sentence has been done for you.

Word Bank

====================

1. The prickly potato spins crazily.

2. The <  >

3. A <  >

4. That <  >

5. This <  >

====================

Now choose one of your sentences from above. Copy it or retype it below. Then add two or more sentences to make a paragraph. Use your imagination and have fun.

Example:

The prickly potato spins crazily.

This sentence might be used in a paragraph as follows.

The prickly potato spins crazily. It spins as fast as a top. The brown, spinning potato turns slowly. Then it stops.

(Remember, a paragraph is a group of sentences that tell about one subject.)
