Adjective Sentences

Sentences are more fun to read if you use describing words. These describing words are called adjectives and adverbs. You can "color" your sentences using adjectives and adverbs. In this activity you will work on adjectives.

Adjectives are words that describe nouns in sentences. For example, the noun in the following sentence is "sheepdog." Notice what happens to the sentence as we add adjectives one at a time.

1. My sheepdog is ugly.
2. My hairy sheepdog is ugly.
3. My gray, hairy sheepdog is ugly.
4. My clumsy, gray, hairy sheepdog is ugly.
5. My huge, clumsy, gray, hairy sheepdog is ugly.

====================

In this activity you will build a series of sentences about "my bike." Each new sentence will contain more adjectives about the bike until the last sentence has a string of four adjectives.

Make a list of adjectives that might be used to describe a bike. Type your adjectives at the < > marker.

====================

Add one adjective before the word "bike" in sentence #1. Add two adjectives before "bike" in sentence #2. Add three adjectives in sentence #3, four in sentence #4, and five in sentence #5.

1. I rode my <  > bike.
2. I rode my <  > bike.
3. I rode my <  > bike.
4. I rode my <  > bike.
5. I rode my <  > bike.

====================

Oops! You probably noticed that just stringing adjectives together doesn't make a good sentence. Read each sentence, then close your eyes and picture the bicycle described by this sentence.

Choose the sentence which you feel is the best. Copy or retype it in the space below. Now write a second sentence to go with this first one.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
