Acrostic

Read the acrostic poem below:

T all tales
A ll
L eap higher than clouds
L augh louder than thunder's roarrrrrr

T ell
A bout make be-
L ieve heroes with fanciful
E xaggerations that make us
S mile

An acrostic poem is easy and fun. It is like a crossword puzzle; but because it is a poem, there is no right answer. You can be playful, silly, or serious.

Acrostic poems are poems that begin with a word written vertically, down the page or screen, like this:

P
O
E
M

This word written down the screen is both the title of the poem and the first letter of each line in the poem. The theme of the poem is set by the title word -- in this case, Poem.

P ossibly poetry is impossible.
O n Tuesdays the breeze in the trees
E choes and rustles the leaves,
M y heart sings.

Below are the beginnings of six acrostic poems. The title words, and therefore the themes of the poems, are written down the screen.

Please complete at least two of the acrostics below. You may want to scroll back up to the examples and read them again before you write your own acrostic poems.

====================

At the < > angle brackets below, make up your own acrostic poem. Perhaps you will choose to use your name as the title of your acrostic. Then you, as a tall tale hero or heroine, will be the theme of the poem; or you may know of a famous tall tale hero or heroine that you would like to write about in a poem.

To write your own acrostic poem:

1. Capitalize the letters of the word and type it vertically on the screen. For example,

P
O
E
M

2. Leave a space between the first letter and the rest of the word. For example,

P ossibly poetry is impossible.
O n Tuesdays the breeze in the trees
E choes and rustles the leaves,
M y heart sings.

Begin typing at the < > angle brackets below.

Rewrite/Edit

Read your poems. If you are happy with them, share them with a friend. If not, go back and work on them some more.

You may want to put your poems away for a few days and work on them at a later time. Then when you think your poems are the best that they can be, share them with a friend.

You can print just your final acrostic poem for this purpose.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
