Walking Home

The very first children's book that Dr. Seuss wrote was a tall tale. The book is called And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The story tells about a little boy who is leaving for school. His father tells him to keep his eyes open so that he can report about what he sees while walking home down Mulberry Street.

All the boy truly sees is a broken-down wagon being pulled by a horse. The boy is sure his father won't think that's very interesting, so he decides to say that a zebra was pulling a gold and blue chariot that rumbled like thunder down Mulberry Street.

The boy continues to imagine even more strange and unusual things -- a reindeer pulling a fancy sled, an elephant pulling a big brass band in a wagon, an airplane that dumps confetti, a magician who does tricks, and a man with a ten-foot-long beard.

Finally, the boy decides he has a story that no one can beat. And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street!

====================

Imagine you are like the boy in the story and you like to make things more interesting by exaggerating, or telling tall tales.

Choose one of the streets you like to walk or ride down, and use your imagination to write some tall tale sentences about what you might see. For example:

When I was walking down 19th Street, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw a hot air balloon carrying a hippopotamus on her way to a birthday party.

Now it's your turn. Complete the sentences at the < > angle brackets below.

When I was walking down <  > Street, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw <  >.

====================

When I was <  > down <  > Street, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw <  >.

====================

When I was <  > down <  > Street, I
couldn't believe my eyes. I saw <  >.

====================

Below are more tall tale sentences for you to complete at the < > angle brackets.

When I got to school, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw <  >.

====================

Now choose your favorite tall tale sentence to rewrite into a paragraph. In this example, the added details have been typed in all capital letters.

Tall Tale Sentence:

When we went to the restaurant, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw people dancing on the tables, and the waiters were serving food with their feet.

Tall Tale Paragraph:

When we went to the ITALIAN restaurant, I couldn't believe my eyes. I saw THREE ADULT people, WHO WERE FATTER THAN PIGS, dancing on the ROUND tables, and the waiters were serving food with their BARE feet. THE WAITERS WERE WALKING ON THEIR HANDS AS SPAGHETTI SLIPPED THROUGH THEIR TOES, AND MEATBALLS THAT WERE AS BIG AS BEACH BALLS BOUNCED OFF THE FLOOR AND ONTO MY PLATE. I WAS SO DISGUSTED, I SCREAMED AS LOUD AS I COULD -- A SCREAM SO HIGH, IT WAS HEARD ONLY BY THE DOGS ON THE NEXT BLOCK. THE DOGS CAME RUNNING, AND I FED THEM MY DINNER.

Now scroll back up to the tall tale sentences and choose the one you want to rewrite into a paragraph. Copy it at the < > angle brackets below and then have fun adding more details.
