Exaggerate

It is fun to say things that are so exaggerated they are unbelievable, just like tall tales. For example, I caught a fish that was as long as my bed, or I can swim as fast as a shark.

You can exaggerate something so much it becomes a tall tale. Imagine you are late for supper and tell your parents, "I was late getting home because my bike got a flat tire."

If you wanted to turn this into a tall tale that would be less believable but more fun, you might say:

I was late getting home because an ape jumped out of a tree right on top of me and stole my bicycle. I chased him clear to Africa to get my bike back. I beat up the ape, and then I came straight home. The hardest part was pedaling across the ocean, because there was a storm, and I had to pedal up over waves that were as huge as mountains.

Below is another example of an event turned into a tall tale for you to read:

Event:

I couldn't turn in my homework because I lost it on the way to school.

Tall Tale:

I couldn't turn in my homework because, when I was walking to school, a tornado came and picked me up off the sidewalk and blew me into the next town. I walked all night just to get to school this morning, and you want my homework!

====================

Read the incomplete sentences below. Then, complete the sentences by typing between the angle brackets. The first sentence should simply tell about an actual event. The second should turn that event into a tall tale. You may want to scroll back up to the examples to get ideas.

Event:

I was late coming home from school because < >.

Tall Tale:

I was late coming home from school because < >.

Name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)

Tall Tale:

I ripped my new pants when < >.

====================

Event:

My clothes got dirty when < >.

Tall Tale:

My clothes got dirty when < >.

====================

Event:

My room is a mess because < >.

Tall Tale:

My room is a mess because < >.

====================

Event:

I didn't finish my homework because <  >.

Tall Tale:

I didn't finish my homework because <  >.

====================

Event:

I lost my jacket when <  >.

Tall Tale:

I lost my jacket when <  >.

====================

Event:

All the cookies are gone from the cookie jar because < >.

Tall Tale:

All the cookies are gone from the cookie jar because < >.

====================

Rewrite one of the tall tale sentences into a paragraph by adding more details and perhaps one or two more sentences. Here's an example.

Tall Tale Sentence:

All the cookies are gone from the cookie jar because a huge mouse sneaked up onto the counter, climbed into the cookie jar, and ate all the cookies.

Might Become:

Tall Tale Paragraph:

All the chocolate chip cookies are gone from the yellow cookie jar because a huge brown mouse, that was as big as our cat, quietly sneaked up onto the counter, climbed into the cookie jar, and ate all the cookies. Then the mouse ran outside. He ran so fast, I had to run as fast as I could to catch him. Tears began rolling down the mouse's face, so I let him go free.

Now scroll back up to the tall tale sentences, and choose one to rewrite into a paragraph. You may want to use the copy feature (select the text, then press ctrl+c) to bring the sentence down to the angle brackets below, or simply type the sentence.

Read your paragraph. Make sure your sentences are complete; check your spelling and punctuation. Make any changes that are necessary. Then, when you are happy with your writing, share it with a friend.

You can print just your Tall Tale Paragraph for this purpose.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
