Alliteration

Alliteration is a big word with a simple meaning. Poetry using alliteration contains two or more words that begin with the same consonant sound. Here are some examples of alliteration:

A fine, flat, fat fish

Two tiny tablespoons of tuna

A big basin full of blue buttons

A slinky, sliding silver snake

A bounding ball bouncing high like a helium balloon

A curly, crawling caterpillar

====================

Below are some words that begin with good alliterative consonant sounds.

====================

Tongue twisters use alliteration to trick our ticklish tongues into twisting turns until our tongues are twisted and tied in twitching twists.

Below are two famous tongue twisters. Try to say them as quickly as you can. Notice how twisted and tied your tongue becomes.

She sells sea shells at the sea shore.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

====================

Here are two more tongue twisters. After reading them, see if you can write some of your own. Say them out loud and quickly to see if they are slick and slippery enough to make your tongue trip, stick, slip, or slide.

Did old Donald Din dine on donuts at nine?

Slippery, slick tongue twisters tickle tongues to stick.

You may want to scroll back to your list of alliterative words to get ideas before you begin writing your own tongue twisters.

====================

Poets often use alliteration. They place words with the same beginning consonant sounds close together in order to emphasize sound or rhythm.

Playful poets
dine on delicious donuts
round, wide, and white
with puffy powdery peaks of sugar
fine and fluffy as silky snow

Big boys bounce bounce bounce
Big black or blue balls
They bounce the balls
Hard and high
Against the hard floor
Against the hall walls

Count the number of groups of alliterative words in the little poems above.

====================

Now write your own alliterative poems. You may want to use a chant line to help you set the rhythm and sound you are going to use.

You may enjoy finding some books of tongue twisters and writing down a few of your favorites.

You and your classmates may enjoy printing a book of tongue twisters from the ones you have created in this activity. If so, work with your teacher to send the tongue twisters you created to a printer. Make copies for classmates, friends, and family. You could even leave space to illustrate some of your favorites.
