Honesty 3 - Stealing

LIZ: Character ED? Sometimes it's fun to be bad. I mean it's just kind of fun. How come it's fun to do things that are bad?

ED: Give me an example, Liz.

LIZ: One time when Buster's back was turned, I swiped his lunch. Just tucked it inside my jacket, sat at another table and ate it. Boy, was it fun watching him look under the table and get madder and madder! He never did find out who took it.

ED: What you did was wrong, Liz. Stealing is wrong. Because you find it fun doesn't make it right. But you asked why doing a bad thing can seem fun.

What do you think? Can doing a bad thing be fun?

Character ED says, "No. Stealing, itself, is wrong." We know that reasons for why one chooses to steal may vary greatly. Here, we will consider just two ideas for why Liz might steal, and what she might do about it. 

Think. Suppose Liz steals for fun--to play a joke on Buster. The stealing is wrong, but how might she make things right with Buster? Write what you would do:

Think. Suppose Liz steals for fun--for the thrill of not getting caught? Does Liz have a bigger problem than just stealing from Buster? Write what you think:

Character ED says stealing for fun--for the thrill of not getting caught is a bigger problem, than stealing from Buster for a joke. Stealing for the thrill of stealing is likely to go beyond Buster to Arthur to Nancy --to anyone Liz chooses to take advantage of. Liz has a problem. Most likely, she will need help to solve it.

If you think you would like to steal for fun--for the thrill of not getting caught--Think. Thrills can be had in lots of ways that don't hurt others--and in ways that keep you out of trouble.

List things you can do for fun; things that keep you out of trouble--make a long list. (Don't forget silly things and things that don't cost an arm and a leg!)

Note: If you or someone you know steals for the thrill of stealing, take action! Seek guidance for yourself or for the other person. Talk to a counselor at school, at church or synagogue, or at home. We are not born to steal; we learn to steal. A learned habit can be changed, even a bad habit like lying or stealing.

Lifelong Hint:
People of character take responsibility for how they speak and act. They speak truthfully and act fairly. 

People of character try to be honest because it is the right way to act. Speaking honestly and acting fairly is a positive behavior; it is morally good.
