Attitude 2

"I said," says Liz, "a good attitude can turn into a bad attitude!"

"Tell me about it," says Character ED.

LIZ: I had a perfectly good attitude toward Sally White until she started shoving and calling me names. She's got a mean attitude!

ED: How's your attitude toward her?

LIZ: Baaaad.

ED: Do you shove her and call her names?

LIZ: Yeah, sometimes. Oh, I know what you're thinking, Ed, A positive, or good attitude produces a positive result. Right?

ED: In general, yes. I happen to believe it does, generally.

Tell why you think Ed uses the words in general and generally:

Do you agree that generally, a good attitude produces a positive result? Tell why you do or do not agree. Try to give an example:

< >

Character ED says: "We need to be the best we can. We are responsible for how we act, even if others act unkindly toward us."

"No way!" says Liz. "If Sally White shoves me, I'll shove her back!"

Tell what you would do.

< >

Consider this: Liz and Sally may choose to continue to call each other names and shove each other. This is one choice. Each is responsible for her own actions, and actions produce consequences.

Think and Write

Think about other choices Liz and Sally have. Write about one of them:

< >

Tell what might be the consequence, or result, of that action:

< >

Consider these ideas

* One chooses to stop name-calling and shoving. As a result, the other one becomes so angry she loses all control and beats up on the other.

* One chooses to stop name-calling and shoving. As a result, the other one stops.

* If both choose to stop name-calling and shoving, the result, may be that their attitudes toward one another begin to change.

Are you or someone you know in an attack situation? Write what you think could change a bad attitude into a positive, or good, attitude:

< >

"Character ED?" says Liz, "I've got a question. Suppose Sally is a lot bigger and stronger than I? Just suppose she could really beat me up. Then what?"

What do you think? Tell Liz what you would do:

< >

Character ED says: "It is a tough problem to have someone bigger and stronger than you pick on you. But, what happened between Arthur and Fred is not unusual."

Arthur and Fred

Arthur was a kind of skinny kid. Looked like he'd topple over in a light wind. Fred, of course, was this big tall guy who acted like he was Illinois State Wrestling Champion. Fred was always calling Arthur names, and when Arthur looked at the sidewalk and wouldn't even say boo, Fred gave him a nudge. A nudge turned into a shove and --you get the picture. It wasn't hard for big Fred to push little Arthur around. So, one day Arthur did some serious talking to himself: I don't have time or money to take up karate. Don't have a big brother to rescue me. Don't want to squeal to my teachers.

What do you suppose he did? Tell what you would you do if you were Arthur:

< >

Write what you think is the most likely consequence, or result of that action:

< >

Arthur's Solution

Arthur chose his moment to talk to Fred. He didn't want any of the kids around. He did want a teacher nearby--but not within earshot. "Fred," he said, earnestly, "I need some help."

"Yeah, Squirt? What kinda help?"

"I'll probably be this skinny little kid until I get into high school! Then, if I grow like my Uncle Henry, I'll be way over six feet tall. In the meantime, I'd like to learn how to wrestle. You're really good. Will you teach me?"

Fred smiled from ear to ear. "Sure, I can learn ya to wrestle." He did! And, before long, the pair became known as "Art and Fred."

Tell why you think Arthur chose his moment:

< >

Do you think brains can overcome brawn? Could out-thinking someone who acts like a bully work for you or someone you know? Tell why or why not:

< >

Character ED says:

"Honest, one-on-one talk about a problem is a good choice. An appeal to a person's better nature may not always work, but offers the possibility of changing actions and attitudes by helping both parties feel better about themselves."

< >

Think. Maybe you have a bad attitude about someone or something. Most of us do from time to time. Write about a bad attitude you have, and what you might do to change it.
