Feelings

This file is just for you! --unless you choose to share it.

Character ED says:

How we act, helps us feel good or bad about ourselves.

What do you think? Begin by telling about a time when you felt really bad about yourself. Tell what happened, and how you acted:

Now, tell about a time when you felt really good about yourself. Tell what happened, and how you acted:

Do you think Character ED is right? Tell why or why not:

< >

Let's take a look at another friend of Character ED's. Her name is Elsie. Elsie feels bad about herself a lot. She should! She's so mean! Do you know what she did to her little sister? No? Well, pretend you do. Make up something mean that Elsie did to:

-her little sister
-a child next door
-a classmate
< >

What might Elsie do to feel better about herself? List your ideas:

< >

Maybe, like Character ED, you would tell Elsie to stop acting mean, and to apologize by saying, "I'm sorry for being mean." Telling someone we feel sorry, can help us to feel better. Feeling better about ourselves can even help us to act better.

"Hey, wait a minute!" (It's that Liz, again.) "Some people say sorry but don't mean it!"

"True!" says Character ED. "Being insincere is a different problem, one we'll get into later. Here we mean saying sorry when we feel sorry."

Maybe, you have a mean feeling about someone or something. Maybe, it's bothering you. If you do, writing about it may give you a new thought or two. Try it. Write about a mean, bothersome feeling. Of course, if nothing is bothering you--that's great! Use the title below for a time when it feels "true," and move along in the file.

Something's Bothering Me

< >

Character ED has another friend named Emily. Emily is feeling pretty good about herself. See if you can figure out why. Here's what happened.

On her way to school, Emily saw Mrs. Johnson's cat run across the street into a vacant lot. She knew Mrs. Johnson never lets her cat run loose. Emily frowned. What will Mrs. Johnson do? she wondered. She's too crippled to go after the cat herself. If I wait until I get home from school, and the cat isn't back, I won't know where to look for it. So, Emily ran across the vacant lot and after the cat.

Of course by now the cat was in the next alley, trotting up to the rear of the supermarket. Emily hurried. Just in time, she saw the cat slip inside. "Here, Murphy!" she called. "Come, Murphy!" Murphy was having none of it. Any cat worth its salt can smell fresh tuna!

"Hey, scram!" yelled the butcher. "No cats allowed!" Murphy arched its back. Emily was quick. She grabbed the cat and ran. Then she handed it over to a very pleased Mrs. Johnson. Of course, Emily was late for school.

This is not the first, or even the second time Emily has been tardy. Tell what you would do, if you were Emily, and were hoping to avoid a detention:

< >

Tell why Emily can feel good about herself, whether or not she gets a detention. (Let's hope she doesn't get a detention!):

< >

Write about a time you (or someone you know) had to choose between helping or not helping someone. Tell what choice was made and why. End by telling how you felt about the choice that was made.

A Hard Choice
