====================

Of the many famous people born in fall, seven are written about in this Fall Birthdays file. Read some of the biographical sketches, then write your response to the questions following the sketch.

September

September 6; Social worker Jane Addams. Jane was born in Illinois in 1860. We remember her because she was one of the first Americans to work for the poor and homeless in the streets of Chicago. She built Hull House as a shelter for people who had nowhere to live. She also fought for laws to protect children who had to work long hours in factories. Jane was a leader in working for causes of social justice. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.

What could you do to help people? Write a short paragraph telling how you could help your friends, relatives, neighbors, or your community.

September 7; Millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan, Jr. When J.P. Morgan died in 1913, he was so wealthy he left a year's salary to all the people who worked for him. He also left many fabulous art treasures. Many are now in museums so everyone can enjoy them. The son of the wealthy Morgan banking family, J.P. built railroads and started the United States Steel Corporation. Besides museums, his money helped found libraries and hospitals.

If you were as wealthy as J. Pierpont Morgan, how would you help society? In a short paragraph, explain how you would put the money to good use.

September 7; Painter Grandma Moses may owe her world-wide fame to a disease! When arthritis crippled her hands in 1938, she worked on the family farm. She reared her children, did needlework, and made prize-winning jams and jellies for the country fairs. Then, in 1938, the 78-year-old grandmother with arthritic hands took up painting. An art collector saw her paintings in a drugstore window in upstate New York. Two years later, she had her own first big show. By the time she died at 101, she was one of America's best-known and best-loved painters.

Imagine you have become a well-known painter. In a short paragraph, describe the picture you painted that was your favorite. Give enough details so readers can "see" your painting.

September 26; Do you like apples? Celebrate John Chapman's birthday! Better known as Johnny Appleseed, he began in 1800 to plant seeds. He started in Pennsylvania and planted all over the Ohio Valley. Walking barefoot, wearing a burlap coffee sack and a tin pan for a hat, he sowed apple seeds along roadways, by rivers, and in forest clearings. Many of his orchards were not discovered until years later, when the Midwestern states were settled. But all farmers don't think highly of Johnny Appleseed. They remember him because of a pesky, foul-smelling weed -- dog fennel. It spread along with the seed during Johnny "Appleweed's" ramblings.

Imagine you are enjoying a freshly picked, juicy, delicious apple. Suddenly you bite into a worm! In a short paragraph, describe this experience -- from the first bite into the apple to the last bite into the worm. What's your reaction? What do you do with the apple?

October

October 2; Mohandas Gandhi of India became known throughout the world as "Mahatma" -- the "great-souled" one. He studied law in London, practiced in India, and then went to South Africa. There, he defended Asian immigrants against the harsh treatment of the South African government. He committed his life to nonviolent passive resistance. He served jail sentences for civil disobedience and led "fasts unto death" to better the lot of the Indian people. In India's struggle for independence, Gandhi was a thorny problem to the government. But to the masses, he was a great reformer and moral leader.

Because of his actions, Gandhi is a hero to many people. Who is your hero? Why? In a short paragraph, describe that person and what makes him or her a hero.

October 11; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was niece of one president and wife of another president. But she won respect and acclaim all on her own. When she died (November 7, 1962), people wept in the streets for the "shy and ungainly" woman. Her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, had an 8-year illness and Eleanor became heavily involved in politics. She was an able advisor. Later, she was a representative to the United Nation's General Assembly and chaired the U.N. Human Rights Commission. She championed social reform and human rights, and spoke and wrote extensively. Even tough-minded political enemies called Eleanor "First Lady of the World."

If you had the ability to work as tirelessly as Eleanor Roosevelt worked for human rights, for what cause would it be? What would you do?

November

November 15; Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. But she did not win fame for Midwestern landscapes. She painted the sunny Southwestern deserts. Sunlight, large splashes of color, shade, and shadow fill her canvasses. Her subject matter shocked some people. Others were delighted. Many paintings were a single flower, greatly enlarged; the skeletal head of an ox; or a New York cityscape. Certainly, her paintings were never ordinary. Few who look at them remain neutral.

What could you do with your special talents that no one might expect? In a short paragraph write about something special you could do with your talents.
