Simile to Metaphor

Changing a simile into a metaphor
Is as easy as opening a door

A simile says,
"I am wild like the wind."
"I am as wild as the wind."

It is tame.
It doesn't take the next step and say,
"I am the wild wind."

The simile,
"I am as hot as a flaming fire,"
would change into the metaphor,
"I am a hot flaming fire."

So, to change a simile
which uses "like" or "as"
into a metaphor,
you remove the "like" or "as" words.

Then rewrite the sentence
so it makes sense
and so it states
that you are
what you say
you are.

====================

The simile is a comparison. The metaphor is a statement. For example:

Similes:

My fingers are as wiggly as snakes.
My fingers are wiggly like snakes.
My fingers are like wiggly snakes.

Metaphors:

My fingers are wiggly snakes.
I am a house with light in the windows.
I am a river that gurgles over rocks.
I am a rock that no one can hurt.
I am a turtle in my shell.

====================

Below is a wonderfully simple metaphor poem. The author, Daniel Chen, is describing himself as a house.

I'm a House

I'm a house,
Three stories high.
I'm a house,
All lonely and shy.
I'm a house,
An old, dirty house.
I'm a house,
With bugs and a mouse.
I'm a house,
With dirty walls.
I'm a house,
With creepy halls.
I'm a house,
All lonely and shy.

Now try rewriting your "I Am" simile poem into an "I Am" metaphor poem. Just delete the words like and as. You may also need to rewrite each line so that it makes more sense. For example:

Simile:

"I am as hungry as a panther prowling the night."

Metaphor:

"I am a hungry panther prowling the night."

Now scroll back to your "I Am" simile poem. Rewrite the similes into metaphors.
