Adding Describing Words

When you were little, you probably read Charlotte's Web. Remember how well you got to know the characters? How you could picture Charlotte in your mind because the author, E. B. White, gave you so many details about how Charlotte looked, talked, and so on? The best stories and books you have read make the characters and the story come alive for you.

You know how dull a story can be when it's filled with tired describing words or no describing words at all.

Read the unfinished story below. Then replace each < > in the story with a describing word or phrase. Try to make your additions specific and colorful. There are no right answers! Your job is to be creative and playful, so that the story makes sense.

For example:

Once a < > boy saw a < > woman standing on a < > street corner.

Might become:

Once a devilish young boy saw a tall, slim, dark-haired woman standing on a dark street corner.

Now it's your turn.

Once a < > boy saw a < > woman standing on a < > street corner. He said to himself, "She looks like a < > lady. I think I will go up to her and < >."

The street was quite a < > one, with lots of < > cars and < > trucks passing by. The < > boy grasped the lady's < > arm with his left hand. Then he said < >, with a < > smile on his face, "Come with me. I will help you across this < > street." He held up his < > hand to stop the < > traffic and then < > led the < > woman across the < > street.

Once on the other side, he < > let go of her arm and said in a < > voice, "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

The < > lady looked at him < > and answered, "Yes. You can take me back across this < > street. You see, you < > boy, I was waiting for a bus over there!"

The moral of this < > story is, don't < >!
