Writing for Your Audience

It's important to think about the person who will read your writing. As you write, ask yourself, "Who is going to read this?" Try to imagine your reader. Think about how that person might respond to what you say and how you say it. Suppose you took a trip to England and wrote to your grandmother about it. It would probably be a different letter from the one you'd write to a friend.

Read the letter below that Molly wrote to her grandmother.

Dear Grandmother,

The airplane flight to London was extremely enjoyable. The food was delicious, and the stewards were very friendly. The pilot told us several interesting stories about flying.

When we landed, we took a cab to our hotel. Mother said it felt strange to drive on the wrong side of the road. But I enjoyed the ride.

The hotel is nice but it is small and old. They serve a delicious breakfast of fried eggs, English-style sausage, and golden toast. My room is old-fashioned and decorated with antiques. It is very pleasant.

Yesterday we went to see many educational and historical monuments, including the impressive British Museum. I learned a lot. Tonight we're going to a violin concert. I certainly look forward to that.

Your grandchild,
Molly

Now, please reread the same letter, copied on the next screen, and think about how you would change it if you were writing to your best friend. Begin by replacing "grandmother" with your friend's name. You'll probably want to add some things, delete some things, and use different describing words.

Be playful! Visualize your friend reading your words. For example, you might change the word "enjoyable" in the first line to a slang word for "enjoyable" that you and your friends use. Then you might add something that another kid would like to hear -- such as flying first class and getting all the milkshakes you can drink!

At the end of your letter, you may want to ask your friend some questions about life back home and about some of your friends! Now please revise the letter, rewriting it to your friend.
