Narrative Writing

In this file you will learn about and practice writing narrative paragraphs. Narrative paragraphs are one of the four basic types of paragraphs: descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive. Review the definitions below.

Four Types of Paragraphs

1. Descriptive: Descriptive writing contains sentences that work together to present a single, clear picture of a person, place, thing, or idea. Often authors use their senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste) in writing a description.

2. Narrative: Narrative writing tells a story. The author creates a story for the reader by telling about a series of events in the order in which they happened.

3. Expository: Factual writing explains ideas, gives facts, provides directions, or describes a process. Expository writing is used when you wish to present or explain facts or ideas.

4. Persuasive: Persuasive writing tries to get the reader to agree with the writer about the paragraph's topic, which is usually an opinion. The writer expresses an opinion and, using information and arguments, attempts to convince the reader that the opinion is correct.

In this file you will practice writing narrative paragraphs.

====================

Narrative Writing tells a story by relating a series of events in the order they occurred.

Read the outlined information below, and then write a narrative paragraph about the topic.

Remember to use all the strategies for paragraph writing that you have learned. Make sure your paragraph is interesting and reflects your own words, not just the words in the outline.

a. He slips quietly into the room.
b. He sits all alone.
c. He watches the other children visiting with each other.
d. He feels very lonesome.

Rewrite/Edit

1) a topic sentence that is specific and not too broad

2) supporting sentences that develop, explain, and support the topic sentence

3) a summary or concluding sentence which holds the paragraph together by restating the main idea or drawing a conclusion
