Limericks

Limericks have a definite rhythm, like a chant. They're also a bit of a puzzle, like an acrostic. The puzzle is that you must rhyme the first, second, and fifth lines. The third and fourth lines must also rhyme, and must also be shorter. For example:

There once was a lazy young fool
Who never wanted to go to school
He never would rake
But preferred to eat cake
And he cried that the world was so cruel

How many lines are in this limerick? If you counted five, that's correct. Notice that the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme and are also the longest. The third and fourth lines also rhyme, and they are the shortest.

Here are a few more limericks that are incomplete. Complete the limericks by typing a rhyming word between the angle brackets.

There once was a man from out back
Who favored kangaroo for a snack

Of the gently blown white < >
The stars so bright
In the sparkling night
All around silent icicles grow

There once was a girl named Nicole
Who loved to ice skate, to ski, and to bowl
She liked to play sports
Of all kinds and sorts
And at golf was an ace in the < >

There once was a cat named Irv

He walked on the wall
But took a great < >
Cuz he missed the swerve in the < >

A shark swims across the < >
Many more times than three
It loves to splash
It loves to slash
I hope it never eats < >
