Jealous Dilemma -- Prewrite

Complete this activity working together with your writing group. If you don't have a writing group, do the activity with one to three other students. (The activity can be completed by you working alone if a group is not possible.)

Prewrite -- Dilemma

Have one person in your group read aloud the moral dilemma below. Do not discuss this dilemma yet.

Jealous Dilemma

Your good friend admires another student who is popular and well liked by everyone. Your friend wants to be like the popular student. Lately, your friend acts, talks, and walks like the popular student. You liked your "old" friend -- you're not pleased with this new personality. Your best friend tells you you've been acting strange and wants to know if there's a problem between you.

Continue by reading the brainstorm directions below.

Prewrite -- Brainstorm

Now you will brainstorm all the thoughts and ideas your writing group has about the dilemma.

To brainstorm you must be spontaneous. Quickly type all ideas without discussing or judging them. Don't worry about the importance of the ideas, just type them quickly. Don't try to find an answer to the dilemma.

Make sure your group's best typist is at the keyboard.

Follow these rules as you brainstorm.

Rules:

Include every idea offered
Don't discuss the ideas
Everyone must participate
No put-downs
Work as quickly as possible

Start typing by the < > angle brackets below.

Prewrite -- Organize

Now you will organize the results of your brainstorm. Read the directions for each step below. After you have read the directions for a step, scroll up to your brainstorm list and do what the instructions said. Then scroll back down and read the next step.

Begin Step One now.

Step One: Delete Irrelevant Ideas

Discuss each idea and decide whether to keep it or not. Do not delete an idea because it contradicts another idea. Delete only those ideas that the group agrees don't really apply to the dilemma.

Scroll up and do this now.

Step Two: Write Sentences

Rewrite each idea into a complete sentence.

Scroll up and do this now.

Step Three: Group Your Ideas

Read your list again. Arrange the ideas into groups of ideas which seem to belong together. Combine ideas that seem to be the same into one sentence.

Scroll up and do this now.

Prewrite -- Position Statement

Now that you have completed all three steps above, your group is ready to write a position statement.

Discuss

Discuss the activity you just completed and ask yourselves the following question: "Do our ideas agree or fit together with one another, or do some ideas contradict other ideas?" If your ideas all agree, your group probably has one position on this issue. If you have ideas which contradict one another, your group may have several positions on this issue.

Write

Write a position statement or statements for your group on this issue. If there is more than one position within your group, write a statement for each one.

A position statement can be one or several sentences in length. It states the group's overall consensus on the issue. (Each group member will elaborate on the position statement later in an individual essay.)

Our Group's Position on the Jealous Dilemma:

Reread the statements to make sure everyone agrees. Rewrite, if necessary, until everyone feels their position is broadly represented by a position statement.
