Me, I Poem

Read the following sample Me, I Poem.

Me, I like hot chocolate
      on rainy days.
Me, I hate it when
      my parents ground me.
Me, I like numbers
      that divide evenly.
Me, I like spaghetti
      when the sauce is meaty.
Me, I wish I could
      eat ice cream for breakfast.
Me, I get sad when
      I see someone hurt.
Me, I have lots of friends.
Me, I like to run
      and play tag with my dog.

Next you will gather some ideas for your poem by closing your eyes and visualizing yourself. Maybe you will see yourself in your room listening to music.

Me, I like to lie on my bed and listen to music.

Or maybe you will see yourself fishing by a river.

Me, I sit in the tall grass and fish all afternoon.

Now it's time to close your eyes and gather some images. Then write your Me, I Poem following the pattern provided below. Remember, you can write about what you love, hate, wish, or fear.

Rewrite/Edit

Read your poem again. Are there changes you would like to make? Can you say things in a different way that will make them sound better? Are there extra words you can delete to make the poem more "streamlined"? Do you want to add some more lines to the poem?

If you like, you can share your poem with a friend or your writing group and ask them what parts are best and what parts could use some rewriting.

One of the best things about writing with an AlphaSmart device or a computer is you can change things easily. So go back and change your poem until it is perfect!

Then you may want to print just your poem for your own enjoyment or to share with your friends or your family.
