Medicine

So far, you've read fables with animals as characters and some with people as characters. In most cases, one character has to learn a lesson when he or she tries to outsmart another. As you read this fable, think about what each character learns. Does this fable remind you of another you've read earlier? Watch for the combining words and word endings, which (there's which again) are written in capital letters.

The Old Woman and the Physician

An old woman, WHO had become blind, summoned a physician. "SINCE you are a healer of such great renown," said she, "I would like to strike a bargain with you. IF you will restore my eyesight, I will give you a most handsome reward, BUT IF you fail, then you shall receive nothing."

The physician, observING that the old woman was comfortably off AND had many possessions, concluded the agreement. He called regularly AND pretended to treat the woman's eyes, meanwhile, bit by bit, carryING off all her goods.

AFTER a time, whatever had been causing the old lady's blindness disappeared, AND she found her sight again. Thereupon the physician demanded the fee. But discoverING that nearly all of her possessions had disappeared SINCE the coming of the physician, she refused to pay him.

WHEN called upon to explain, she decided to give him a taste of his own medicine. "You may think that I am cured, BUT it cannot be true, FOR before the malady came upon me, I could see all sorts of furniture and goods in my house. But now I cannot see a single stick. Therefore I must still be blind!"

The End

====================

So, the physician's plot backfired on him. What he was forced to learn is probably the moral of the story. Think about the other fables you've read, which are listed below. Which one is most like this one in its moral? Talk it over with your writing partners, choose one and delete the others.

"The Man and His Two Daughters"
"Jupiter and the Bee"
"The Young Man and the Swallow"
"The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing"
"The Fox and the Stork"

====================

If you chose "The Fox and the Stork," you were right. Remember how the stork gave the fox "a taste of his own medicine"?

Now put the moral in your own words. Let each partner give it a try. If you're not sure where to begin, try these words: "He who . . ."

Aesop's careless scribe has done it again. Fix the sentences below by moving the combining words into the right places. You may delete and add words if needed.

Scribe's Fable to Edit:

====================

You probably noticed that a number of connecting words cropped up in the story. These are combining words that act just like because. (In grammar books, these words are called "adverbial or subordinating conjunctions.") If you want a list of these, read them on the handout your teacher may have given you, and then read on.

Try making up some of your own sentences at the markers, using the following because words. Maybe each partner could write one sentence. If you're not sure where the comma goes, check the reference file.

after: <  >

since: <  >

before: <  >

====================

There are lots of different ways to combine sentences. You've seen that for yourself. Let's look at one group of sentences from the fable.

Sentences from Fable:

The physician, observing that the old woman was comfortably off and had many possessions, concluded the agreement. He called regularly and pretended to treat the woman's eyes, meanwhile, bit by bit, carrying off all her goods.

We can break these down into skinny sentences to look like this:

The physician observed that the old woman was comfortably off.
She had many possessions.
He concluded the agreement.
He called regularly.
He pretended to treat the woman's eyes.
Meanwhile, he carried off all her goods.
He did this bit by bit.

Below is another copy of the skinny sentences. Edit by combining them into two or three sleek sentences. You may retype your new sentences at the angle brackets below, or you can simply delete from and add to this copy of the skinny sentences.

Skinny Sentences to Edit:

The physician observed that the old woman was comfortably off.
She had many possessions.
He concluded the agreement.
He called regularly.
He pretended to treat the woman's eyes.
Meanwhile, he carried off all her goods.
