Misplaced Phrases

A writer pretended to be a juggler and mixed up the parts of these sentences! See if you can put them back where they should be. Move each phrase in [ ] to where it should be in each sentence. Then change the capital letters and punctuation if you have to. (Sometimes when you edit your own work, you'll want to move some phrases around too!)

[they used to tell stories] A very long time ago, before most people could read. In time, [came to be called myths] these stories. Sometimes the heroes [who could do magical things like make thunder and lightning] of these myths were gods or goddesses or giants. [or smarter] These heroes were almost always stronger than normal people.

Myths have come to us from many countries. [from China, and from many countries in Africa] we know myths from Greece. [From the countries of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark] The myths are called "Norse Myths." Some Norse gods were Woden, Thor, and Frigga. [were named after them] three of our days of the week. Can you guess which days those are? Type them here: [ ]

Misplaced Describing Words

Now, look what happens sometimes when we put describing phrases in the wrong place:

The painter, hanging from the ceiling, saw a spider.

Hmmmmm. Who is hanging from the ceiling? The painter or the spider?

Fix the sentence below to show that the writer meant it was the spider who was doing the hanging!

The painter, hanging from the ceiling, saw a spider.

====================

If you fixed the sentence this way you were right!

The painter saw a spider hanging from the ceiling.

The following story has several misplaced describing phrases in it. These are enclosed in [ ]. They make the sentences hard to read. Move the [ ] phrases so they are in better order. If you have partners, talk together about the sentences as you fix them.

You will need to add or change a few words in some sentences. Do whatever you want to make the sentences complete and smooth. Be sure to "clean up" the screen when you are finished.

Jesse knew [before school was over] that he had to finish his story about a whale. [Being the biggest creatures on earth,] he found that whales are fascinating. But [while he was writing the composition on the computer,] the electricity went out. He was mad because he saw that the beginning of his story was missing [about a killer whale].

Maybe something can be done by the teacher [about the electricity], he thought. Or maybe I should write the story about a whale who makes friends with a dolphin [with a paper and pencil].

Jesse saw the computer and the screen go "Beep" [while looking for a paper and pencil] [with a hum and a flash] and it lit up. Jesse began working, and he was careful [every few minutes] to save his story [happy again,]. The story [and it was a good one] was finished [about the habits of whales]. At last, [ringing loudly to announce the end of the period,] Jesse heard the class bell. [And saved to disk quickly,] he admired his story. Then he turned the computer off [standing up and flipping the switch].
