Sentence Mix-Up



When you write something, you may not put the sentences in the best order. By rereading the paragraph carefully, you can often find a clearer or stronger way to order the sentences. The result? A paragraph that reads more smoothly.

In this activity, you will put groups of sentences in the order you think they belong. There is no one correct order, but some are definitely better choices than others.

Steps

1. Find the topic sentence to begin the paragraph.

2. Then look for key words that link certain sentences together. Order the supporting detail sentences after the topic sentence.

3. Finally put the summary sentence at the end of the paragraph.

Here is the first group of sentences. Decide what you think is the best order.

Russian scientists have taught them to respond to forty-four different commands.

They are so smart that they actually perform in pig circuses in Russia.

Some of the commands they respond to include "sit," "lie down," "roll over," and "speak."

Although pigs are thought of as messy and dirty, they are actually very smart.

Now copy your sentences below in the order you think works best. When you finish, you should have a smooth paragraph.

If it did not carry its own umbrella, it would have to retreat to its underground burrow whenever the temperature climbs above 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Cape ground squirrel of southern Africa carries its own umbrella.

This umbrella is actually its bushy tail, which it raises over its body for shade.

In this way, it can stay above ground searching for seeds and nuts much longer.
