Feeling Like

Feelings are a very important part of everything we do and think. In this activity we are going to explore the world of our feelings.

List all the feelings you can think of. You may want to list them in pairs of opposites. For example:

love/hate
happy/sad

Type your list below.

Similes use "like" or "as" to further describe an idea. For example:

"I feel as frightened as a fish being pulled from the water."

From your list of feelings, choose the ten that are most important to you. You can scroll back up to look at your list if you need to. Then complete the simile statements below for each of the ten feelings. Insert words or phrases wherever you see the < > angle brackets.

My Similes

1.  I feel as < > as < >

2.  I feel as < > as < >

3.  I feel as < > as < >

4.  I feel as < > as < >

5.  I feel as < > as < >

6.  I feel as < > as < >

7.  I feel as < > as < >

8.  I feel as < > as < >

9.  I feel as < > as < >

10. I feel as < > as < >

====================

Now you are going to rewrite your similes into metaphors. To do this, take out the "as" words. So instead of feeling "like" or "as" something, you become the thing you picture when you write a metaphor. Often metaphors use the word "am."

     Simile:

     "I feel as frightened as a fish being pulled from the water."

     Metaphor:

     "I am a frightened fish being pulled from the water."

Use the copy feature to copy the ten similes from above to the < > angle brackets below. (Select the text, then press ctrl+C. Move your cursor to the angle brackets and press ctrl+V to paste.) Then rewrite them into metaphors.

====================

Now develop one of the metaphors into a paragraph. "I am a frightened fish being pulled from the water" can be developed like this:

"I am a frightened fish pulled from the water. My lungs are about to burst. I'm panting. My eyes stare at the sky. I'm confused. The sky is blue, but it is a blue that will kill me. It is not the sea. Not where I belong.
My body twists and with every twist cold steel tears my mouth."

Choose the metaphor from your list that has the most meaning for you. Copy it below. Then expand on the pictures and feelings that go along with the image. Write two or three more sentences to go with your metaphor.
