Verbs of Transformation

Your teacher may have given you a handout about transformation words. Before you begin this activity, read the "Verbs of Transformation" handout with your classmates.

The transformations below have interesting verbs.

Flashlights pulse into sirens.
Lollipops pop into polka dots.
Peppermint sneezes into cinnamon.

Now read some transformations using the general verb "becomes." Then change "becomes" into a more interesting verb in each line.

Seeds <become> trees.
War <becomes> peace.
Fire <becomes> heat.
Friends <become> enemies.
Empty <becomes> full.
Sad <becomes> glad.
Winter <becomes> spring.
Anger <becomes> happiness.
Eggs <become> omelets.

Here is a poem by a fifth grader. Notice the interesting choice of verbs and the story line. There is a definite relationship between the first and last line in the poem.

Now write your own transformation poem. Be sure it contains a theme or story. Choose verbs that help the reader feel the mood of the ideas you are sharing. Remember, you can use images from daily, natural, manufactured, mood, or imaginary transformations.
