Paragraph Order

The paragraphs below are not in the right order for a good essay. Each paragraph also has some "deadwood." Remember? Deadwood is extra words and phrases that are unnecessary because they are repetitious (and boring).

Read all the paragraphs first. Then  put the paragraphs in a better order. Delete the deadwood, changing any punctuation you need to. Then read the paragraphs again to see if your new order is still the best. If not, move paragraphs some more!

If you have partners, talk it over as you make changes. If there is time, print out and compare your group's final work with another group's work.

In 1937, she set out one day to fly around the whole, entire world. She flew a twin engine plane with two engines, and she was accompanied by a navigator who told her stuff about directions and stuff. Her plane disappeared somewhere and vanished over the South Pacific Ocean and probably into it. No wreckage was ever found. No one succeeded even though many people looked.

In 1935, she flew across the blue Pacific ocean and through the blue, blue sky from Hawaii all the way to California. She was the first person -- man or woman -- to complete the long flight halfway across the Pacific Ocean. And you know how large the Pacific Ocean is. Even halfway is a long way. All other attempts before her success had ended in failures because they never made it and so they failed. What a shame for them.

The mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart is one of the enduring mysteries of the twentieth century. That means the 1900's. It is really strange. Lots of people have theories about her disappearance. You should know something about her life, because you might have some theories of your own and stuff.

Amelia Earhart, famous as one of the world's most famous aviators, was born in Kansas in 1898. When she was still young and only 19 years old, she became the first woman person to fly across the whole Atlantic Ocean from one side to the other. (She was a passenger.) Four years later, when she was four years older, she flew the Atlantic again, but this time she was alone because no one was with her.
