Trust 1

Character ED says:
"Being sincere helps us to know and to trust ourselves.
Being sincere helps others to know us and to trust us."

"So!" asks Liz, "being insincere is like being a liar?"
"Hmmm," says Character ED, "maybe yes, maybe no."

Is being insincere the same as lying? Tell what you think, and why:

Listen in on this conversation; then tell what you think:

Mrs. Goose and Fox

"My, my Mrs. Goose, but you look lovely today," said Fox. Mrs. Goose looked mightily pleased.

"Thank you, Fox," she said.

"You're welcome," said Fox, thinking what a lovely meal Mrs. Goose would make for his supper.

Do you think Fox was being sincere or insincere? Tell what you think, and why:

< >

"Trick question!" says Liz. "Fox is partly sincere--his words are sincere!"

"You may be right!" says Character ED. "His words may be sincere. But tell me this, is Fox being truthful or is he being deceitful?"

Tell Liz what you think:

< >

Character ED says (and Liz agrees):
"Fox is deceitful. He says one thing, but means something else. His words may be true, but he is untruthful because his intention is false. Fox is being deceitful."

Bet you know an example of saying one thing but meaning something else. Go ahead, give an example:

< >

Speaking in half-truths, or trying to deceive someone, is being dishonest. If we make a habit of deceiving others, we give them reason not to trust us. Read on:

The Case of the Missing Lunch Tickets

The whole sixth grade is in an uproar! Our homeroom teacher is making the whole class stay late because a roll of lunch tickets is missing. "The roll was in my drawer before lunchtime," Mr. Jackson says, "Now, it's missing. I'm going to ask each of you, in turn, if you know where it might be. Lisa?"

"I don't know, I didn't take it," Lisa says.

"Robert?"

"I didn't take it," says Robert.

"Carol?" Holy cow, he's looking at me... "I...didn't take it!" But I know why it's missing... If I tell him, he'll think I took it.

"Louis?"

"Maybe the big bad wolf came 'n ate that roll all up." Now, the whole class is laughing, and Mr. Jackson is even madder.

"Louis, you're pretty smart. I bet if everyone else leaves, you'll be able to help me figure out who took the lunch tickets. You stay. The rest of the class is dismissed." Holy cow, now what'll I do...Should I let Louis get in trouble?...He's always in trouble anyway for shooting off his mouth.

Write what you think. Should Carol tell what she knows? Tell what you would do if you were Carol.

Here's More Information
Carol overheard her brother and a friend of his (both, eighth graders!) talk about playing a trick on Mr. Jackson. They planned to take the sixth grade's roll of lunch tickets, and mail it to Mr. Jackson for a Halloween "trick 'n ticket."

Does this new information change your answer to what Carol should do?

Yes/No

< >

Explain your answer:

< >

Some Options and Consequences to consider:

O. Carol could tell Mr. Jackson that Louis didn't take the lunch tickets, and tell him who did.

C. Carol may get Louis off the hook, but get in trouble with her brother.

O. Carol might do nothing. After all, Louis is used to being in trouble.

C. Louis may be accused of stealing because he's always in trouble.

O. Carol could tell Mr. Jackson that Louis didn't take the lunch tickets, but not tell him who did.

C. Carol might be pressured into telling what she knows.

Does Carol have another option? If so, tell what it is and give a possible consequence.

< >

Tell which option you would choose if you were Carol, and why:

< >

Liz says, "Carol should tell Mr. Jackson Louis didn't do it, and that her brother did! Right, Character ED?"

"That's one option," says Character ED. "Carol could also take a chance on Mr. Jackson's being understanding. For sure, she should tell him Louis didn't do it. She might then ask Mr. Jackson to give her time to help clear up the mess."

If Carol chooses the option Character ED suggests, and Mr. Jackson is understanding, what should she do, next? Tell what you would do, and why:

< >

Suppose Carol tells Mr. Jackson that Louis didn't do it, but Mr. Jackson is not understanding. Tell what you would do then, and why:

< >

Carol's Solution:
Carol waited until her classmates left homeroom before telling Mr. Jackson that Louis didn't take the lunch tickets. She said she knew who took them and she wanted some time. Mr. Jackson agreed to give her time. That night, she talked to her brother, and told him that he and his friend must talk to Mr. Jackson or else she would have to. Halloween was too long to wait.

Was Carol's solution a good one? Tell why or why not:

< >

Can Carol be trusted? Who has reason to trust her? Tell why (or why not) Carol can (or cannot) be trusted by:

Louis

< >

Mr. Jackson

< >

Her brother

Lifelong Hint:
For the most part, we do not have control over how others act.
And we cannot always help how we feel. We can try to control
how we act. How we act helps us feel good or bad about ourselves.
