A good writer had written an interesting essay about the history of writing. But her cat jumped up on the keyboard and added lots of screen junk. Now she needs an editor like you. Please use the Delete and BAckspace keys and the Space bar to make the essay ready for printing.




Numbers and Letters

Did you know that? when people#began to write,// many letters we now#use were first used as numbers?X It's#true.! In ancient times people used#letters to show the number of days#that had passed or the number of#animals in a herd. You can still see#some of these letter-numbers in cave#paintings. Today we sometimes use#letters for numbers.=-=- Think about#Roman numerals.By the time of the#Romans, the alphabet was used for both#letters and numbers.123 You can see#Roman numerals on some clocks and also#on the cornerstones of certain#buildings. An "I" stands for the number#1, a "V" stands for 5, an "X" for ten, "C" for 100, and so on. .Something similar#happened with computers. The very#first electronic computers  were#simply very fast calculating machines.# They added, subtracted, multiplied and#divided numbers very quickly. But#before long, people saw that the#computer was useful for processing#words as well. Today many people in#homes, offices, and schools use#computers as "word processing"#machines as well as number processing#machines. They have found that#writing on a computer is easier than writing #on a typewriter.
