In the Inn

More homophones -- words that sound the same but that may be spelled differently and have different meanings! There are hundreds of homophones. They are fun to play with in poetry.

More Examples of Homophones

In and Inn
Nay and Neigh
Pause and Paws
Plain and Plane
Road, Rode, and Rowed
Whole and Hole

Below are some sample poems using these homophones. Read them and then write a few of your own.

Homophone Poems

Paws

It is not unusual
to see a lion pause
to lick his paws
with lots of drool

In the Inn

He rowed to the harbor
Then he rode down the road
He took a route through the trees
with the big twisting roots
He went in at the inn
His friends asked,
"Where have you been?"
He went up to lay
his head in his bed
but the maid had left
the bed unmade

Holes

A hole in a whole piece of cloth
may have been made by a gnawing moth
which is why there's no peace
between the maid and the moth
who made the hole
in her mistress's cloth

First, add more homophones to the word bank below. Add words that you would like to try to use in poems of your own.

When you've written a few,
at least one more than two
and you feel like you're through,
sit down with a friend, or two
and see what ideas you find
to fill up your mind.
Turn over some stones,
you'll find lots of homophones.
