Creating Character through Setting 1

In these files you are learning about and practicing the use of six basic strategies for developing character. They are:

1) Description
2) Dialogue
3) Action
4) Reactions of other characters
5) Setting
6) Narrative

This file focuses on developing characters through setting.

By describing the setting, you have an indirect way of revealing character. For example, what does your own room say about your character? Do your furnishings, possessions, decorations, colors, state of array or disarray say anything about the person you are? By looking at your bedroom, a person may be able to understand some things about what type of person you are, what you value, and what you like and dislike.

My home, then, - when I at last find a home, - is a cottage: a little room with white-washed walls, and a sanded floor; containing four painted chairs and a table, a clock, a cupboard, with two or three plates and dishes, and a set of tea-things in delf.
