In Tall Tales

What Is a Tall Tale?

A "tall tale" is a story in which the hero or heroine is bigger, better, faster, braver and smarter than what they truly could be in real life. Tall tales are full of fantastic ideas, exaggerations, and lies.

In tall tales, heroes and heroines are so big they make pencils out of pine trees. Their pets are as large as trucks and run as fast as lightning. Heroes and heroines are so wild, they turn snakes into lassoes, and they think nothing of riding tornadoes.

In a tall tale, a child hero or heroine might lift a pet horse or a slipping house, eat more food than a dozen hungry lions, outshout a hurricane, outswim a shark, and outsmart all the evil and boring people in the world.

Examples

Tall tales describe people, animals, places, events, and even the weather in fantastic ways.

For example, a big person is not simply "as big as a door." A big person in a tall tale would be so big that her right foot is in California, her left foot is in Vermont, and her yellow hair is the flames of the sun.

A fast person is not simply "as fast as my big brother." A fast person, in a tall tale, is so fast that he runs around the earth three times before you can say "hippopotamus," and he isn't even out of breath!

In a tall tale, a snowstorm is more than just a "big" storm. A snowstorm is so big that when the storm is over, the moon is the head of the snowman.
