Acrostics

Your teacher may have given you a handout about acrostic poems. Before you begin this activity, read the handout.

Acrostic poems are poems that begin with a word written vertically, down the page or screen, like this:

This word is both the title of the poem and the first letter of each line in the poem. It is also the theme of the poem.

How Do You Write an Acrostic Poem?

A good place to begin is to think of words that you especially like. At the angle brackets, make a list of favorite words, favorite foods, hobbies, sports, feelings, favorite places, and favorite people.

Add other words to the list such as most disliked things, moods, states of mind, and names of friends.

The next step is to let a first line using the first letter spring into your mind. Just make up words that begin with the letter you have to use. You may want to use a dictionary to look up your word choices when you get stuck. For example, looking for a word that starts with "x" is a tough assignment.

Scroll up to your word and write down your first line. Then try to think of a second line that goes with the first one. Remember to try to stay with the theme, but if you can't, you may still be able to create a wonderful poem.

Meet with your writing support group to share your poem. You may want to print just your own writing for this purpose.

Write an evaluation of your poem. You may insert a copy of your poem into your essay. Then you can put quotes around the lines you want to talk about, so the reader will know where the line or image from the poem begins and ends in your essay. Explain what you like and dislike about your poem.
