Simplest Essay Questions, Part 1

The simplest type of essay question asks you about something upon which you are an authority. For example, the question may ask you to describe your home, a friend, or a parent. It may ask you to tell about your favorite T.V. show, a memory from long ago, or what you'd like your life to be like in ten years.

The most important thing to do when you are answering an essay question is to make sure you answer the question. For example, if the question says, "Describe your favorite sandwich," and you write about your favorite food, you could fail to pass that question.

There is a simple trick to help people write about what the question asks. The trick is to write what the question asks in the opening sentence of your answer. Then make that sentence the topic sentence of your paragraph.

Below are seven simple essay questions. They are simple because you, the writer, are asked for your opinion. Your job is to rewrite each of these questions into the first sentence of each of your answers. The rewritten sentence will contain the question and it will be a topic sentence.

Example:

The question says, "Tell about your first friend you can remember." Your answering topic sentence might read,

"I will write about my first friend I can remember..."

Or

"The first friend I can remember was..."

Either of these answers starts you off in the right direction. Each answer restates all the main ideas the question asks for.

"A friend I had once..." would not be a satisfactory beginning because you may or may not remember to write about your first friend.

"I've had many friends..." would not be a satisfactory beginning either because again you might fail to address the question. However, this sentence could become a good beginning if you add a few words: "I've had many friends, but the first friend I can remember was..."

Here are your seven simple essay questions. Read each of them carefully, then write your answering topic sentence at the marker. Make sure each sentence includes all the important details the question asks for.
