Think

Can You Afford to Work?

A. Uniforms or Work Clothes

Depending on your employer's type of business, you will wear a uniform, work clothes, or casual or dress-up clothes. Sometimes uniforms are provided and sometimes you must purchase them. If your wardrobe is limited, wearing a uniform (even purchasing one) may be less costly than taking a job that requires dressing up.

I (can) (cannot) purchase new clothes.

B. Transportation to and from Work

Do you currently have your own transportation? Do you live on a bus route? If not, how can transportation be provided -- by walking, biking, driving or being driven, by bus? Will you need to pay for gas or maintaining a car, or pay for bus fare or car pooling?

I (have) (do not have) transportation.

C. Less Time for Homework

If you take a part-time job, you will have less time for studying and other commitments. Probably, you do have enough time for work and study, if you can plan a schedule and stick to it. Which of the following sounds most like you?

a. I lack self-discipline.
b. I have adequate self-discipline.
c. I can learn to become self-disciplined.

If you answer "b," you are one of the lucky ones. Many young people are learning to become self-disciplined. It's part of growing up!

D. Less Time for Extra Activities

If you take a part-time job, you will have less time for participating in sports, music, or recreational activities. Probably, you do have enough time for work, study, and outside activities, if you can....(Can you guess?)....schedule your time and stick to it.

E. Less Time for Friends

If you work, you won't have as much free time to spend with friends. On the other hand, you will make new friends through your work. You may find that the time you have is better spent, even though you have less of it.

Some people find they work best under the pressure of a tight schedule. There is a simple reason for this. When time is tight, people tend to make better use of it.

====================

You have considered drawbacks related to a part-time job while you are still in high school.

Can you afford a job? (yes) (no)

Do you still want a job, even if you feel unable to afford the costs or the time? (yes) (no)

If yes, good for you! If no, read on. The purpose of considering the drawbacks is not to discourage you from seeking a job, but to make you more aware of what is involved in getting and keeping a job.

Anticipating the Difficulties May Prevent Problems.

Do you need convincing? Help unravel the situation described in Case Study 1, which is the next activity on your diskette.

Summary

Which two of the following questions were considered in this portion of Job Storming?
