Of the many famous people born in winter, five are written about below. For one of them, we use the death date, because his birthday is not known. Read some of the biographical sketches, then write your response to the questions following the sketch.

December

December 5 -- Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Bambi owe their fame to Walt Disney. So do Snow White and Pinocchio! As a boy, Walt loved to doodle. He doodled when he wasn't riding trains to sell newspapers. He doodled on his Red Cross ambulance when he wasn't driving it. He drew chickens and cows for an advertising company. But, Walt's dream was to bring fairy tales "to life." He animated a mouse for "Steamboat Willie." Then, Walt and "Mickey" went to Hollywood. There, Mickey became the most famous mouse in the world. Walt became a famous producer of cartoons and movies. Walt Disney died in 1966, but his creations still bring joy to millions of people all over the world.

Which Walt Disney character is your favorite? Write a short paragraph to tell how the character looks, acts, and talks.

December 16 -- When Margaret Mead was deciding what to do with her life, she said she wanted "to do work that matters." Male professors didn't think a woman should do field work in Polynesia. But that didn't stop Margaret! In 1925, she sailed for Pago Pago. She won the trust of the natives by living as they did in open huts, by eating raw fish, and by bathing in public. She won the friendship of young girls and watched and kept records of their behavior. Her study called "Growing Up in Samoa" woke people up worldwide to new ideas. Margaret Mead's work with people in primitive cultures helped bring about new understanding of people in general.

Do you think studying the daily life of people in Polynesian was work "that matters"? Write why or why not.

December 24 -- Guide and buffalo hunter Kit Carson was a baby in a covered wagon when his family left Kentucky to settle in Missouri. There was no school. Kit learned to "read" signs from leaves and grass. He learned to stalk birds and animals and to shoot straight. When a falling tree struck and killed his father, Kit had to plow, shuck corn, and stand guard against Indian attacks. At fifteen, he joined a wagon train bound for Santa Fe. He cooked, drove horses, trapped, hunted buffalo, and handled a bull whip. One day, he met Lt. Charles Fremont. "Come help me chart and explore the interior of North America, Kit," said Fremont. And, as a result of their survey (1843-44), California became part of the United States. Fremont had high praise for Carson's bravery and loyalty and Kit Carson became a hero. He became a scout in the war with Mexico, and later spoke for Ute and Apache tribes in land treaties with the U.S. government.

What do you think Kit Carson looked like? Write a short paragraph telling how he looked and dressed.

January

January 30 -- (death date) "We want peace, but we will not leave." Those were the brave words of the great Chief Osceola. When he was a small boy, white settlers and soldiers drove Creek and Seminole people from Alabama. They fled to Georgia. Driven from Georgia, they fled to Florida. The boy became a man and took the name Asi-Yahola. He became a leader of his people in the fight against removal to Oklahoma. He led the revolt during the Second Seminole War (1835-1837). He became tired of war, but would not give up. Government forces made him a prisoner during peace talks. He died in prison on January 30, 1838. After death, a prison doctor removed Osceola's head from his body. It was discovered when Florida became the 27th State -- the great Native American's body was to be returned to the land he'd fought so hard to defend. Because of Asi-Yahola's courage, Seminole still own lands in Florida -- the only tribe who never signed a treaty with the government.

How would you feel if strangers took over your town and made you leave your home? What would you do?

February

February 17 -- At six, Marian Anderson sang with a Baptist church choir. Her voice, like "richest velvet," brought tears to listeners' eyes. It still does. At home, money was scarce. She scrubbed steps to earn money for music lessons. In high school, she sang for church meetings and socials. Her church collected money to send her to music school. The school told her, "We don't take colored." She suffered many injustices in America. She saved her money and went to Europe. There, audiences went wild. A famous conductor said, "A voice like yours is heard only once in a hundred years." Marian went back to New York. When the Daughters of the American Revolution refused her their concert hall, 75,000 Americans protested. They stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to hear her sing. She became the first African-American to sing with the Metropolitan Opera. She has won many honorary degrees and medals as one of our country's greatest "ambassadors."

If people treated you as shamefully as Marian Anderson was treated, do you think you could keep on singing? Write why or why not.
