Answers:

The all-time best answer to questions one through sixteen rhymes with "be" as in Be Yourself and dress casually, but neatly. Situation 8 may be an exception. "Dressy" may be preferred to "neat-casual" by a modeling agency. When you request an interview, ASK if the company prefers a certain style of dress for your interview.

Wearing "everyday grubbies" is not smart for any job interview. Nor do you need to wear designer clothes. Neatness counts! Casual slacks, such as khakis, are often a better choice than jeans. Make sure clothing fits nicely, not too baggy nor too tight, and make sure clothing isn't considered revealing.

Remember, you are presenting yourself to a potential employer. Show by your appearance that you took time to look and dress neatly for the interview. A careless, offhand appearance may give you the look of a careless person ...which you are not. Your having gotten this far along in Job Storming activities proves it!

Question 2:

Should you take someone with you?

Yes
No
Maybe

The answer is no and no way! You alone are being interviewed. A potential employer wants to know you can stand on your own two feet without a back-up. Leave shopping bags and tennis rackets at home, too. Don't let the employer think you have anything on your mind other than a job interview.

Question 3:

What should you say?

Your problem may not be in what you say, but how you say it. You may feel scared, shy, and unimportant. Don't. Prepare yourself. Practice speaking in front of a mirror. Notice where your voice is coming from. Is it up in your throat? Speak and breathe from your diaphragm much like a singer. A good trick is to stiffen your knees and take a deep breath. Holding your knees in tight forces your diaphragm in and your shoulders up.

Some Questions You May Be Asked

Type your answers next in the angle brackets below. Answer questions as honestly and thoughtfully as you can. There are no magic answers. Employers are not seeking a right answer. They are asking you what you think. Think your best about yourself and your abilities.

Situation: You are being interviewed by Richard Potter, owner and manager of Potter Photography Studio. He is looking for a high school boy or girl who is willing to work after school and some Saturday mornings doing an assortment of odd jobs. You have just introduced yourselves to each other and the interview begins.

Mr. Potter: Where have you worked before?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Why did you leave?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Why do you think you want to work here?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Is your school work going all right? Do you have time for a job

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Do you drink or take drugs?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: The kind of person I need to help me has to take an interest in my business. See that things are put away. Be willing to learn about mixing chemicals. Clean up in the darkroom. If I'm busy, talk to customers or answer the telephone. It's not a routine job. Do you think you'd like doing a lot of different things?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Do you have after-school lessons or play any sports?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: I can carry on alone once in a while, if something special comes up for you, but year-round, I need someone who is reliable and can be here Monday through Friday from three until five o'clock. Those are my busiest times. Around the holidays, I'd probably want you to work Saturday mornings. How do you think you'd feel about working when your friends might be out having a good time?

You: < >

Mr. Potter: Well, I appreciate your coming in. I'll read over your application, and I'm going to be talking to a few more people. I expect to make a decision by the end of the week. If I call you, can you start on Monday or Tuesday?

You: < >

====================

The interview is over. Should you say:

a. "Thank you, Mr. Potter," and leave.

b. "Thank you, Mr. Potter. I really hope you'll give me a chance. I'd like to learn about your work here."

c. "Thank you, Mr. Potter. I appreciate this interview, but I don't know if I can handle all the work."

d. "Thank you, Mr. Potter. I'd like to hear from you."

< >

Answer a. This answer is fine depending on how you say thank you. If you say, "Thank you, Mr. Potter," you communicate enthusiasm.

Answer b. This answer is fine if you mean it. If you really want the job, letting Mr. Potter know is good. Don't say what you don't mean. Insincerity may cost you the job.

Answer c. Of course you don't know! No one knows ahead of time how they will function in a job. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and keep your fears to yourself. If you feel very uncertain, answer "a" is a good choice.

Answer d. This is a good, straightforward answer. Most of us like to be offered a job, even if we don't accept it.

What If Mr. Potter Doesn't Call?

Situation: Mr. Potter said he would make his decision by the end of the week and indicated he would like the new person to start on Monday or Tuesday. It is now Tuesday after school, and Mr. Potter hasn't called you.

Which do you assume?

a. Mr. Potter has hired someone else.
b. Mr. Potter does not want to hire you.
c. Mr. Potter can't make up his mind.
d. Mr. Potter tried to call you but couldn't reach you.
e. Mr. Potter has changed his mind about hiring.

< >

Any of the above is possible. You don't know. Don't assume. Find out. You have a right to ask Mr. Potter if he has made a decision. He has the right to tell you or not to tell you, but you have the right to ask. Asking shows you have sufficient interest in the job to make inquiries.

Mr. Potter may have hired someone else. Suppose that person quits or does not work out? Given there were other suitable applicants, employers would rather choose among them than begin interviewing all over again. You may be among the suitable applicants and rise to the top of the list because you make a follow-up phone call.

A Rare and Unpleasant Situation!

You will find that most employers, even those who seem very, very busy, will treat you with courtesy. However, somewhere there lurks the adult who forgets what it is like to be a teen-ager looking for a job, perhaps a first job. This tyrant-appearing person may be impatient, may be having a bad day, or may just be a nasty person.

Be sure you remain polite, even if you come across an employer who isn't.

You have a right to be treated with courtesy. If an employer is truly rude and discourteous (not just busy or impatient), you have two options: suffer through it or face up to the situation.

Option 1: Suffer through it.

If you should be unlucky enough to meet with the rare employer who is rude and insulting, you can choose to ignore it and try not to react. You can be polite.

Option 2: Face up to the situation.

Consider if this person is truly mean or just having a bad day. Either way, you may not wish to work for someone who shows such poor judgment in a job interview.

You could say, politely of course, "I don't think I would like working for you, Mr. X (or Miss X, or Mrs. X). I have more respect for myself than you seem to have."

Be prepared for a response: surprise, anger, or (hopefully) a "turn-around." Perhaps you will gain respect for speaking up. Perhaps not. However, you show respect for yourself and the offending person by calmly expressing your legitimate feelings.

Summary

-- Neatness is more important than fashion when you apply for a job. Look as though you care.

-- How you speak is important. Speak up! Be sincere. Be honest.

-- Think your best about yourself and your abilities.

-- Be a participant in the interview.

Remember:

This is your interview. You requested it and you received it. Participate. An interview is a two-way conversation.
