"Compare" Essay Questions

Often an essay question will ask you to compare something with something else. You may be asked to compare football and baseball, sewing and cooking, rabbits and cats, apples and oranges, democracy and dictatorship, love and hate, or spaghetti and pizza.

When you write a comparison between two or more things, you discuss what is similar and what is different between the things, emphasizing the similarities.

For example, if you are asked to compare love and hate, you might set up two columns and two separate sets of categories:

Similar:

	Love Hate

	emotion emotion
	intense intense
	feeling feeling
	hot hot
	action action

Different:

	Love Hate

	gentle violent
	patient impulsive
	happy painful
	learns reacts
	takes turns controls

Now it should be easier to write your essay.

"Compare" Essay Question

Write a comparison between love and hate, explaining their similarities and differences.

"Compare" Essay Answer

Step One

Rephrase the question into a topic sentence.

"I will compare love and hate, which are opposite emotions with many similar and many different qualities."

Step Two

Describe their similarities (refer to your list).

"Love and hate are similar because they are both strong or intense emotions. They are both feelings you have for someone. Both heat you up. They excite you and make your heart beat faster. When you love or hate you can't think about anything else. Both love and hate are so strong that they make you take action."

Step Three

Describe their differences (again refer to your list).

"Hate and love are very different from each other, too. Love is gentle and generous, while hate is violent and stingy. Love tries to be patient but sometimes it is hard, especially if one is lonely and in love with someone. Hate never tries to be patient, unless it is waiting for revenge. Any happiness that comes from hate is usually short-lived. Hate is a painful emotion, but love creates more and more happiness. This is especially true of the love in a family. Love takes turns and learns about the other person. Hate tries to control everything. Hate thinks it knows the truth about a person or situation, and it doesn't allow any room for change or for improvement."

Step Four

Write a summary or concluding statement.

"By comparing love and hate I see that they are opposites. They have a few things in common, but in the most important ways they are totally different."

From the set of nine comparisons below, choose three. Then make a list showing what is similar and what is different about the two topics in each comparison. Here is a sample list:

Love - emotion, intense, feeling, hot, gentle, happiness, takes turns, likes to kiss and laugh.

Hate - emotion, intense, feeling, hot, violent, painful, rough, won't share, likes to argue and fight.

Now choose and complete your three comparisons. Type your lists at the angle brackets.
