Homophones

Homophones are those tricky words that sound alike butt have different spellings and different meanings. To catch them, ewe have two bee on your toes. Otherwise ewe end up writing something like these instructions, and they don't make a lot of cents. Did you find all six homophone pears hear? (Now I'm up to ate. Okay, nine.)

There are other pairs of words that, while not truly homophones, are also confusing and give many writers trouble -- such as advice and advise. Ask your teacher for the "Confusing Words" handout, which accompanies this activity. It contains a list of tricky words and homophones, in alphabetical order. If you are unsure of homophones, you might want to look at the list.

Delete the incorrect word in each of the following sentences. Then, compare your answers with the corrected sentences that follow.

Now read through the following passages from Jack London's "To Build a Fire," eliminating the homophone and word choice errors. The corrected version follows each passage.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
