Deleting Deadwood

Whenever you revise your writing, you should look for words or phrases that are unnecessary -- deadwood, we call these. They might be words that repeat an idea you've already stated, or long phrases that could easily be replaced by one word!

The paragraphs below have much "deadwood" in them. Use the Delete or Backspace key to delete deadwood words. If you want, you can change words or add words that would improve the paragraphs.

Of all the foods I like, in fact of all foods, the food I like best, really the best and my favorite food is pizza. First of all I like the color or really the colors of pizza since the color is so pretty. The more stuff you put on it, like green things and red round stuff, when you are making it and putting stuff on it, the prettier it looks. I love the color of tomatoes, and cheese, and green pepper, and pepperoni because I love red and yellow and green and dark red.

Next, I like the way it smells all cheesy and sweet when it's cooking and it's steamy hot and full of good smells. Then the way it tastes...well, it tastes really great because it's so very good. I don't even mind if it's greasy, just so the grease is spicy. I like greasy and oily food, especially if it's also spicy, and hot, and full of tasty good flavors that are mixed together when they're put together.

I know I shouldn't eat pizza every day or often or every week because it's so fattening and can make gross ugly fat pimples on my face...yuk! Since I don't want to get fat and pimply (getting fat isn't good for you and pimples are so gross I can't believe how ugly they are), I only treat myself to pizza occasionally once in a while and not too often. Then I like and appreciate it as a really special treat which isn't an everyday or all the time thing.

If you have time, write a paragraph about some food you like -- and add lots of deadwood to it. Then print it out, and trade papers with a partner. Draw lines through the deadwood, as if you were each other's editor.
