Proverbs



Using your newly developed skills, write paragraphs that explain and illustrate three of the following proverbs. Think of examples from your own life that seem to prove each proverb. Use these examples to illustrate why you believe the proverb is true. Then use the proverb itself as your summary sentence.

A sample proverb summary sentence is shown below, followed by a paragraph as an example.

Sample Proverb Summary Sentence:

     "If I try to be like someone else, who will be like me?"

The first day of summer camp, I tried to be like everyone else. I went to handicraft class because everyone else in my cabin wanted to do handicrafts. I really would have preferred to go horseback riding. My friends chose hamburgers for lunch; so I chose hamburgers for lunch, even though I wanted salad. That evening I went sailing instead of canoeing because someone said, "Nobody likes canoeing!" Well, I stabbed my finger with a needle in handicrafts, I felt stuffed from the hamburgers, and I tangled the sail up in the tiller. I must learn to be myself. After all, "If I try to be like someone else, who will be like me?"

Read through the summary sentences and choose three of them to write about. Write a brief paragraph for each summary sentence you choose.
