Writing for Your Audience

Authors think about who they are writing for. When you write, ask yourself, "Who do I want to read this?" You might not write the same letter to your grandmother that you write to your best friend.

Suppose last Saturday was the first day of summer vacation. First, read about all the things you did:

Got up early and went with friends to a lake where you:
went fishing,
cooked breakfast,
played volleyball, and
went swimming.

In the afternoon, you:
stopped at the zoo,
went on rides at the amusement park, and
got sick.

That night, you:
watched a movie,
made popcorn, and
fell asleep on the couch.

Write two letters about your first day of summer vacation. Choose one person from Group A and one from Group B to write your letters to.

Group A

grandmother
uncle
aunt
teacher

Group B

boyfriend
girlfriend
brother
sister

I Will Write My Letters to:

Dear < >,

Letter B

Dear < >,

Would you mail the letter you just wrote? Make a copy of the letter of your choice below. Then, just for fun, you can add the disclaimer below to your letter at the beginning or at the end. Then think of a real person to send the letter to and make any changes you would like. Take time to make your letter personal, friendly, and informative. Be sure to ask the person you are writing to about him or herself.

Here is another writing task which has a specific audience in mind. Choose one of these topics or create one of your own:

a black bear in the woods
a clown on a bicycle
a train ride
an airplane trip
a walk in the park

Next, choose your first audience:

a child under six
a child six to eight
a child nine to twelve
a young teenager
an older teenager
an adult

Now, write your paragraph keeping your audience in mind.

My Audience Is:

< >

My Topic Is:

< >

Paragraph One

< >

====================

Write a second paragraph using the same topic, but to a different audience.

My Second Audience Is:

< >

Paragraph Two

< >

====================

Share your paragraph with a writing partner or writing group. Do they see what you saw through your writing? Without looking at your writing, ask them to tell you what they remember about it.

What does your reader remember?

< >

Rework your paragraph using specific words of description to make your paragraph "memorable." Find readers for your revised paragraph and test their memory. Trust your audience!

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
