My People

On this Where the Sidewalk Bends disk, we write poems about everything from doors and trapezes to crooks and witches. It's time to write a poem about ourselves and those we love.

The verses below, entitled "My People," were written by children after they read the poem "My People" by Langston Hughes. This "My People" poem uses a verse from three different poems by students.

My People

The brown earth is beautiful
So the skin of my people

The golden lion in the jungle is beautiful
So the courage of my people

The wind in the trees is beautiful
So the voices of my people

Langston Hughes created a pattern that is like a simile. Instead of using like or as, he used so in a way that means similar to or like.

Write

Who are your people? Consider the following groups, and add any other groups you might want to write about.

family
relatives

Let's Practice

Complete the two-line stanzas below. Notice that in the first line there is an image from nature that is beautiful, gentle, strong, or positive in some way.

In the second line, you will create an image describing some feature of your people that is similar in some way to the image in the first line.

Think about your people's eyes, hands, prayers, hopes, and dreams to build your poem. Add your ideas to the word bank below.

Word Bank of Features of My People

eyes
hands
skin
prayers
voice
hopes
friendship

Now read the first lines that present images from nature and imagine what features of your people could be paired with these images. Then type those features between the angle brackets.

Example:

The night is black and soft
So the <hair> of my people

The sun is warm
So the < > of my people

The night is bright with stars
So the < > of my people

The rivers swirl and sing
So the < > of my people

The snow falls silently
So the < > of my people

The elephant is strong
So the < > of my people

The ocean is deep
So the < > of my people

It's time for you to write your own "My People" poem. Think about the group you've chosen to write about. Then think about different images from nature. You may want to close your eyes and see what scenes from nature occur. In the first line, tell about a scene from nature. In the second line, begin with "So" and describe a quality of your people.

Rewrite/Edit

Read your "My People" poem over several times. Do you like it? Do you want to change it? Rewrite your poem until it says just what you want it to say.

Peer Review

Ask a writing partner or a friend to read your poem to you. Listen. Do you like the sounds, the pictures?

Copy your poem to the angle brackets below. Then make any final changes.
