Little Door

Poets often find ideas for new poems in the poetry of others. Sometimes they will even imitate another poet's work as a way of complimenting them. It is as if they are saying, "I like your poem so well, I've written one like it."

Read the poem "Little Door What Are You For" on the screen below or on the handout sheet. You may wish to compare it with "I Wouldn't" in You Read to Me I'll Read to You by John Ciardi.

Little Door What Are You For

Little door,
Little door,
So small
Down low
On the floor.

What in the world is such a little door

          XX
       XX XX
      XX FOR? XX
     XX XX
     XXXXXXXXXXXX

Who could live down inside
A door not so very wide?
They couldn't be very fat,
For how would they pass
From out
                   to inside?

Who could live inside
A house not so wide???
A house not so tall???
You'd have to be very small
To live within this wall.

I think I'll listen...

Could it be?
Someone playing ball
Inside the wall?
Inside the hall?

I'll kneel down on one knee.
What's that I see!!

A little mouse
A pinch
Taller
Than an inch
Is playing ball
Inside the hall wall!
