Some people are good influences on us, while others may be bad influences. In this activity you are going to write a description of a person who has had a big influence, good or bad, on you.

Write your description as clearly as you can. Tell about the person's relationship to you, how he/she looks, talks, walks, and dresses. Discuss his/her values.

For example:

"The person who has had the greatest influence on me is my grandmother. She is so sweet. She looks like she should be on a cookie package. She can't walk fast because she has a brace on from when she had polio. She's short and round. She is soft and always smells sweet. If I have a problem she always has time to talk with me. She never laughs at me. She always understands. I know she always loves me no matter how stupid I'm being or what my problem is. The way she has most influenced me is I want to be as kind and loving as she is."

Now that you have described the person who has had the most influence on you, describe one situation in which you felt this person's influence. Tell a story about one time when you were with this person and something special happened. Give as many details as you can. Help the reader understand just what happened and how you felt.

"My clearest memory of when my grandmother influenced me was when I was sick. I had the mumps and I was in bed in the dark for about three weeks. I started to get really nuts from just lying there without even being able to talk. My grandmother would come in all the time. She knew just how I was feeling. She'd bring me juice with a curved straw. Then she'd set the checkers up on the checkerboard. If I didn't want to play checkers she'd just read to me, or she'd tell me what people in the family were doing and about how everyone wanted me to get well real soon. When I was feeling weak and lonely, she knew just how to make me feel loved."
