Free Verse 2
Associating Images

Your teacher may have given you a handout about free verse. Before you begin this activity, read and discuss the free verse 2 handout with your classmates.

====================

The nice thing about free verse is that you are free to follow your feelings, imagination, and ideas wherever they lead you. In free verse, poetry is a pattern of language, usually brief, that stimulates the reader to a personal response. There is a play of images and language not usually found in ordinary expository writing. Free verse is often as personal as a journal.

Here is an example of a free verse poem.

In Free Verse
the form of the poem
is taken from
or emerges from
within the poem itself

There are no rules
of rhythm or rhyme
only the poet
and the reader
know if the poem
ends on time
or hangs on like slime

Before writing free verse, practice finding images within yourself. For each item below, you may want to take a minute and close your eyes so you can see the image. Then find words to briefly describe the image. Be sure to include words that make the picture personal and unique.

Remember, when you describe an image, you are simply describing a picture that comes to your mind. Be sure to provide enough details to help the reader see what you see.

Once you have some images to work with, they can be expanded. Choose one or more of your images from above and expand on it as much as you can. You don't need to write a complete poem, just see what you can do with the images. You may want to run two or three images together.

Now copy your expanded images below, and see if you can revise them into a poem.
