Sound Chants

We can begin a sound chant with a sound word. This word will tell the sound of something that happens over and over again. For example, the chant word may be the sound a dog, cat, or telephone makes.

Listen to the sounds around you. Do you hear any repeating sounds? Perhaps you hear an electric light hum, hum, humming, or people talk, talk, talking.

====================

Below are some chant sound lines. Read these lines. Think of a picture or idea that you can describe. Then write a second line below the chant line. Here is an example:

Choo choo choo
The long long train chugs by.

====================

Type your second lines at the markers.

Tick tick tick

<  >

Woo woo woo

<  >

Splat splat splat

<  >

Ring ring ring

<  >

Name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)

====================

Now reread what you wrote and see if you can add some details. For example:

Ring ring ring
The phone rings.

Maybe you could tell whose phone rings where:

Ring ring ring
My grandma's phone rings and wakes the baby.

Wa! wa! wa!
The baby wakes everyone!

====================

The sounds that most animals make are repeated over and over. For example, the dog bark, bark, barks, while the cat says meow, meow, meow, and the bird sings tweet, tweet, tweet.

You can use these sounds in our animal sound chant poems. Begin by making a list of animal sounds.

The list below is started for you. Add as many animal sounds as you can think of. Continue with your own animals at the angle brackets.

My List of Animal Sounds

bird = tweet, tweet, tweet
dog = woof, woof, woof
frog = <  >
pig = <  >
duck = <  >

<  >

====================

Now write the second line for each chant line. Tell something special about the animal that makes the sound. Tell about something the animal feels or does.

Type your line between the angle brackets.

Moo moo moo

<  >

Meow meow meow

<  >

Woof woof woof

<  >

Quack quack quack

My Own Animal Chants

====================

Now reread what you wrote and see if you can add some details. For example:

Meow meow meow
The cat is thirsty

Here it is with more detail:

Meow meow meow
The black kitten is thirsty for milk

Scroll back and add details to your chant poems.

====================

Now write some more of your own poems. Begin by putting down an animal sound chant line. Then, in the second line, tell more about what the animal is doing or saying.
